Angie Hanan, vice president of the Fort Bend Independent School District Board of Trustees, is seeking a third term in Position 1 in the Nov. 3 election.

Hanan, a 29-year public education veteran, said she signed up to run in July on the first day candidates were eligible to file. "Above all, I am running to ensure all students have exceptional academic and extracurricular experiences in a safe environment districtwide," Hanan said in a questionnaire response to Surround Sound News.

The Fort Bend ISD trustee race is nonpartisan.

Candidate information

Residence: Fort Bend ISD for 33 years, first in Pecan Grove and now in Sugar Lakes

Family: Married to husband Tom for 35 years. Their daughter graduated from Dulles High School in 2024 and began her junior year of college in fall 2026.

Education: Bachelor's degree in political science from Oklahoma State University. Master of Education in curriculum and instruction from the University of Houston, plus 60 additional graduate hours there in educational leadership.

Hometown: Moore, Oklahoma

Experience and public service

Hanan began her education career as a substitute teacher in Alief ISD after arriving in Houston in 1991. She went on to serve as a classroom teacher, English as a second language teacher, reading intervention teacher, literacy coach, K-12 ESL district coordinator and educational consultant.

She joined Fort Bend ISD in 1997 as a teacher at Highlands Elementary, according to her district biography. She spent nine years in the district before launching her own consulting business, Hanan Educational Resources, in 2006.

Hanan said she has paused her career while serving on the school board but continues professional training. She completed the Texas Reading Academy in 2023 and the Texas Dyslexia Academies in 2026.

She was first elected to the Fort Bend ISD board in November 2020 and re-elected in May 2023. She said the school board is the only elected office she has ever sought.

Beyond the board, Hanan served two years as a member of the Texas Association of School Boards' board of directors. She was a board member of PACE, the Fort Bend Association of Parents for Academic Excellence, from 2014 to 2019, and served as a parent member on Fort Bend ISD's Gifted and Talented Task Force from 2017 to 2021. She has been a volunteer deputy voter registrar in Fort Bend County and Harris County since 2018.

Why she is running: Hanan said she has deep pride in her community and believes strong student outcomes, high-quality schools and a well-compensated workforce are connected to the success of neighborhoods, cities and businesses across the district.

Student advocacy: Hanan's career in education and her volunteer work have focused on advocating for children of diverse backgrounds and abilities, according to her BallotReady profile.

Board experience: Hanan cited her track record of being "prepared, visible, and responsive to stakeholders" and her service on district and board committees. She said that as a two-term trustee she has worked with three superintendents and 15 elected trustees. She said she understands the serious commitment of time and energy it takes to make a difference for students and constituents.
