Incumbent Angie Hanan and challenger Pedro Valencia will face off for the Fort Bend ISD board of trustees Position 1 seat on Nov. 3.

The voter registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 5. Early voting runs Oct. 19 through Oct. 30.

Hanan, the board's current vice president, was re-elected to the seat in 2023. She spent nine years working in Fort Bend ISD as a teacher, literacy coach and administrator, including as the district's English as a Second Language coordinator, before starting an educational consulting business, according to the Houston Chronicle. She has also volunteered with the Fort Bend Association of Parents for Academic Excellence and the district's gifted-and-talented task force.

Hanan and her husband are longtime district residents. Their daughter graduated from Dulles High School in 2024.

Hanan told the Chronicle on Sept. 20 that she is proud of the district and plans to continue working for progress for students, families and staff.

Valencia, whose children attend Fort Bend ISD schools, told the Chronicle that supporting teachers is a major reason he decided to run. He said he and his wife both attended public schools and that educators played an important role in their lives.

"I'm running for my children, who are current public school students right here in Fort Bend ISD," Valencia told the Chronicle on Sept. 20. He said he wants to give teachers a voice and the support they deserve.

Valencia said he is not running against Hanan personally and praised her background as an educator and consultant.

The race takes place as Fort Bend ISD faces declining enrollment and budget pressure. The district serves more than 75,000 students across 78 campuses, down from a peak of more than 80,000 in the 2023-24 school year. The district earned a B in the state's 2026 accountability ratings, up from 80 points in 2025 to 82. In March, the board voted to close seven elementary schools to save an estimated $5 million to $7 million per year as the district faces a possible $32 million budget deficit, the Chronicle reported.

As we reported Sept. 28, the district also faces potential revenue losses from a state voucher program heading to a November vote.

Community Impact Newspaper published a Q&A with both candidates on Sept. 28. Board members serve three-year terms. Position 1 covers the west portion of the district.

Fort Bend County participates in the countywide polling place program, so registered voters can visit any polling location within the county during early voting and on Election Day. Polling information is available at fortbendisd.gov.
