A Latin-Caribbean and Southern soul food fusion restaurant has soft-opened on Highway 6 in Missouri City, giving the Sienna area a new dining option with a full bar and a menu built on oxtails, empanadas and fried catfish.
Comfort Foodies opened its doors at 8731 Highway 6 after co-founders Elsa and Jeff Matthews closed their previous location off North Sam Houston Parkway West in April to focus on the move, Community Impact reported. The couple announced the soft opening in an Aug. 12 news release.
"We have been looking forward to the day when we could finally open these doors and welcome the Missouri City community into our new home," Elsa Matthews said in the release. "This location represents so much growth for us, but at the heart of Comfort Foodies, we are still about the same things we have been since day one — great food, family, culture and community."
The Matthews founded Comfort Foodies in 2020 as a food truck and catering operation, blending Elsa Matthews' Dominican and New York roots with Jeff Matthews' Southern soul food heritage, according to the Houston Press. They opened their first brick-and-mortar off Sam Houston Parkway in 2022 and ran it for nearly four years before shutting down to prepare the Missouri City space.
The new restaurant seats 50 to 60 guests across roughly 3,000 square feet. The larger footprint allows for expanded takeout, delivery and catering alongside dine-in service.
A full bar with seating is new. Happy hour is planned once the restaurant is fully up and running.
The menu features oxtails seasoned with housemade sofrito and braised in their own juices, Dominican-style brown stew chicken (pollo guisado), smothered pork chops and Southern-fried catfish. Sides include tostones, collard greens and Caribbean rice and beans. Desserts include peach cobbler and bread pudding, and a brunch menu offers chicken wings and waffles. The restaurant also ships nationwide through Goldbelly and is expanding its frozen empanada line.
During the soft-opening period, Comfort Foodies is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A grand opening date has not been confirmed but is expected in fall 2026, a media representative for the restaurant told Community Impact.
