Thurgood Marshall High School cut the ribbon on its new Fine Arts Building on Thursday, Aug. 6, giving Missouri City student performers a dedicated space to rehearse, create and compete just five days before Fort Bend ISD's first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The timing was intentional.

The building caps roughly 15 months of construction that began in May 2025, funded through the FBISD 2023 Bond Program overseen by Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith. The same bond initiative paid for separate choir and dance area renovations at Marshall completed over Winter Break, a project carried out by Prime Contractors Inc. in collaboration with campus administration and the district's Design & Construction team, according to FBISD Operations.

Marshall's fine arts program has produced results beyond the stage. The school announced in May that its fine arts students earned more than $6 million in college scholarship dollars, a figure spanning theatre, band, choir, visual art and dance.

Approximately 60,000 students participate in fine arts courses across Fort Bend ISD each week, according to the district. The district has been recognized as one of the top 100 school districts nationally for fine arts education based on a nationwide survey of public and private school programs.

The school, located at 1220 Buffalo Run in Missouri City, posted on X that the new space reflects the campus's commitment to giving students opportunities to create, perform and thrive. Marshall opened in 2002 as one of Fort Bend ISD's 12 high schools.

Fort Bend ISD's first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 11.
