Stafford's City Council will hold its next regular meeting Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 2610 S. Main St.
The city announced the meeting Monday, Aug. 17, on X, directing residents to the online agenda and live stream. The full agenda is posted at staffordtx.gov/381/Agendas-Minutes.
Residents who can't attend in person can watch live on Comcast channel 16, AT&T channel 99 or on the city's website.
What's been on the council's plate
Several consequential items remain unresolved from the council's Wednesday, July 15 meeting, according to the meeting minutes.
The council took no action on a proposed amendment to its solid waste contract with Green for Life (GFL) after discussion and public comment. That contract change has not been resolved.
On Flock Safety automated license-plate-reader cameras in the GRID district, the council voted 4-3 to direct the city attorney to contact the East Fort Bend Development Authority about splitting costs for a one-year agreement. Council members Wen Guerra, Alice Chen and William K. Bostic Jr., along with Mayor Ken Mathew, voted in favor. Mayor Pro Tem Tim Wood and council members Xavier Herrera and Virginia Rosas voted against.
Whether either item returns Wednesday is not confirmed in the posted agenda packet available to the Journal at publication time.
Budget season
The council is also deep in its FY 2026-2027 budget process. A Wednesday, July 8 budget planning session showed projected General Fund revenue of about $31 million against expenses of roughly $32.9 million, a gap of nearly $1.9 million. Ten vacant city positions were not included in those salary figures.
Stafford does not levy a city property tax; its general fund relies primarily on sales tax revenue.
The council held a special budget workshop in August, though outcomes from that session have not been publicly confirmed. Last year's budget was adopted Sept. 29, 2025, following a public hearing.
Other recent action
At the July 15 meeting, Council Member Chen reported that the city's Moody's credit rating rose from A2 to A1. The council also unanimously approved a $19,160 grant agreement with the National Civic League for a voter participation project ahead of the Tuesday, Nov. 3 election.
