The Stafford Spartans shut out Houston Austin 62-0 on Friday, Oct. 9, in their UIL District 10-4A Division I opener.
The 62-point margin was the largest on Stafford's schedule this season, according to CW39's Week 7 score report. Head coach Ken Savanah's squad improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in district play, per MaxPreps.
Austin never threatened. The visitors fell to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in district.
The blowout caps a two-game stretch in which the Spartans regained momentum after back-to-back losses. Stafford fell 42-14 to Hamshire-Fannett on Sept. 18 and 49-30 to Silsbee on Sept. 25. Before that skid, the Spartans opened the year 3-0 with wins over Hitchcock (43-42), Waltrip (51-7) and Bellville (29-25).
Waltrip has won four straight since that Sept. 4 loss to Stafford, the Houston Chronicle noted in its Week 7 preview. That early-season result looks better by the week.
Stafford now sits second in the District 10-4A Division I standings behind Fort Bend Willowridge, which is also 1-0 in district with a 3-3 overall record. Austin is third at 0-1.
Savanah, who has led the program since at least 2017, guided the Spartans to a 6-6 record last season. Two seasons ago, Stafford finished 8-5 with a playoff run that reached at least the area round.
Fernando Correa Sr. leads the Spartans with four field goals on the season, per MaxPreps stat leaders.
