A Tejano music legend is heading to the Stafford Centre on Sept. 12 for a dinner concert that will fund scholarships for Stafford High School seniors.
The Hispanic Heritage Alliance of Stafford is hosting "Spurs & Sparkles: A Scholarship Celebration," featuring three-time Grammy Award winner David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales. Proceeds go to the organization's H2A Scholarship fund.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Garza takes the stage at 9 p.m. The City of Stafford announced the event on July 31.
A growing scholarship program
The Hispanic Heritage Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Stafford, has partnered with the city on annual scholarship fundraisers at the Stafford Centre for several years. The program has grown: in a June 2025 proposal to the Stafford Centre Committee for a prior event, Vice President Richard S. Ramirez wrote that the Alliance's goal was to fund three $5,000 scholarships, up from three $1,000 scholarships awarded the year before.
"Our goal this year is to raise enough funds to provide three $5,000 scholarships," Ramirez wrote in that June 2025 proposal. "Last year the Alliance was able to provide three $1,000 scholarships."
The Alliance also noted it expected out-of-town travelers to attend, as they had for previous events.
About the headliner
Garza, born and raised in Poteet, Texas, has spent more than 50 years on the road and produced more than 30 albums. His band is credited with launching the careers of Tejano vocalists Emilio Navaira, Jay Perez and Ramiro "Ram" Herrera. His album "Just Friends" won the 2013 Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album.
The Sept. 12 show appears on Garza's official tour calendar.
