Fort Bend ISD Athletics opens the 2026–27 athletic seasons with a community tailgate at Mercer Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The Texas Way Tailgate runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and features food trucks, giveaways and live performances, according to a Fort Bend ISD post on X. The district described the event as a community-wide celebration open to families across FBISD's attendance zone, which includes Missouri City and Stafford.

Mercer Stadium sits at 16403 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land, next to the FBISD Administration Building. The 9,768-seat venue opened in 1975 and serves as a home field for several FBISD teams, including the Elkins Knights and Marshall Buffalos.

The tailgate's name nods to a distinction the district has earned twice in a row. Fort Bend ISD was named a Texas Way District of Distinction for the second consecutive year in June, one of only 39 districts in Texas recognized for promoting sportsmanship, character and positive school spirit at athletic events. The Texas Way program is a statewide initiative that evaluates how districts and campuses foster positive environments around competition.

The Sept. 9 event caps a busy preseason for FBISD Athletics. The department held a Student Athlete Leadership Summit in late July to set the tone for the new school year and welcomed a class of new coaches in late August. Both efforts fall under "The Bend," the new identity and online platform FBISD Athletics unveiled over the summer to unite the district's programs under one brand.

"The Bend represents the collective strength of every student-athlete, coach, campus and community within Fort Bend ISD," Director of Athletics Deborah Mize said in an August announcement about the platform.

Local teams are already in action. Ridge Point, Elkins, Marshall and Stafford all opened their 2026 football seasons Friday, Aug. 28. The tailgate gives families across those communities a chance to gather before UIL district play begins later in the fall.
