Fort Bend ISD students will wrap up the 2026-27 school year one day earlier than planned.
The district's board of trustees voted Sept. 28 to shift the final student day from May 27 to May 26, clearing the calendar for four consecutive graduation ceremonies scheduled before Memorial Day. Community Impact Newspaper first reported the change.
The adjustment affects families across the district's 83 campuses and approximately 79,600 students, including those at Ridge Point, Elkins and Thurgood Marshall high schools in Missouri City. Under the old calendar, the final student day would have overlapped with the start of the graduation ceremony window, meaning some students would still be in class while commencement events were underway.
May 26 will remain an early release day for middle and high school students, according to agenda documents. May 27 becomes a teacher workday instead of a student day.
The board had approved the original 2026-27 calendar at its Jan. 29 meeting, setting the school year to run from Aug. 11 through May 27 and adding an extra day of instruction compared with the prior year. Venue reservations for graduation came after that approval, according to agenda documents, creating the scheduling conflict that prompted the one-day shift.
A community survey conducted before the January vote drew 8,063 responses. Of those, 69% rated the proposed calendar favorably or strongly favorably, according to a Community Impact report on the original calendar approval.
Superintendent Marc Smith referenced the calendar update in a district post on X on Oct. 1, alongside news about the newly adopted tax rate and secondary attendance boundary planning.
The board's vote is final. No additional public comment period is listed in available records. The district has not published the specific dates or venue for the four graduation ceremonies.
