The Stafford Police Department is hosting its annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6, encouraging residents to gather with neighbors and local officers.
The City of Stafford announced the event on X on Sunday, Oct. 4, describing it as an annual effort to build police-community partnerships and strengthen neighborhood connections. The department said in its 2025 application materials that small residential block parties help residents build relationships with the neighbors who know their families and property best.
National Night Out is a nationwide community-building campaign sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The program launched in 1984 with 2.5 million participants across 400 communities in 23 states. By 2016, it had grown to involve 38 million residents in 16,000 communities, according to the association.
The campaign is designed to increase awareness of local police programs, including drug prevention, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts. Typical activities include block parties, cookouts, safety demonstrations, youth events and visits from emergency personnel.
Most of the country holds National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August. Stafford and many other Texas agencies schedule theirs for the first Tuesday in October because of the summer heat, according to the city's National Night Out page.
Stafford officers break into two-person teams to visit each registered block party, bringing handouts and other items. The city distributes donated items equally among participating parties. Since 2016, the department has required all parties seeking officer visits or donations to submit an application at least two weeks before the event.
The city has not announced a start time, central gathering location or detailed schedule for Tuesday's event. Residents with questions can contact the Stafford Police Department's Community Liaison Officer at (281) 261-3950.
Missouri City is also holding its own National Night Out on Tuesday, as we reported Oct. 4. The two are separate events organized by their respective police departments.
